“Israel as a ‘Crazy’ State,” World Affairs, July 2025. (With a heavy dose of irony, I apply Yehezkel Dror’s 1970s concept of “crazy state” to analyze Israel’s behavior–ironic because Dror developed the concept so as to label Israel’s adversaries as “crazy” and therefore so dangerous as to warrant international boycotts, subversion, and even invasion to thwart, defeat, or neutralize them.)

My Vist to Masafer Yatta area, June 2012: Demonstration at Susiya. Solidarity, Soldiers, and Tear Gas: V. (With all the attention being given to the powerful film No Other Land, about the struggle to protect villages in the South Hebron Hills, I thought it might be useful to post videos and photos from one of my visits to the area. Susiya is a Palestinian community in the South Hebron Hills, adjacent or basically part of Masafer Yatta. Its inhabitants have been the target of settlers and Israeli government efforts to clear the land for decades. At the time I was there this campaign featured settler attacks on vehicles taking Palestinian children to school, demolition orders against EU financed solar panels, and attempts to treat village lands as an archeological site to preserve them for settlement expansion. Years later I participated in a solidarity workdays in Um el-Kheir, also in this area.)

“Democracy, Liberal Zionism, and Civil-MIlitary Relations in Israel: A Review Essay,” Political Science Quarterly, October 17, 2024 (online). (The article compares Guy Ziv’s2 024 book, Netanyahu vs. the Generals and Yoram Peri’s 2006 book, Generals in the Cabinet Room. My analysis of these two worthy studies—each motivated by fear for the end of Israeli democracy–demonstrates the exhaustion of liberal Zionism in the wake of the radicalization and expansion of the Israeli state. It also registers the striking fact that each of these two divergent but compelling treatments of civil-military relations in Israel was contradicted by events that occurred shortly after their publication. Those unable to access this article through the paywall can request a copy directly from me.)
